Glutinous Rice

Here we have a relatively simple dish of glutinous rice surrounded by slices of sweet cucumber and vegetarian "chicken", topped with a mushroom. I have to admit, I didn't really like the brand of veg "chicken" used here, the taste was a bit awkward. The other brands that we used before were much better. The rest of the dish was great.

Sweet Cucumber Stew

This is Chinese sweet cucumber stew, a combination of sweet cucumber stuffed with mushrooms, black fungus, and fried gluten. The soup is mushroom based flavored with galanga and ginger.

The cooked cucumber has excellent texture -- warm, soft, and yet firm enough for a slightly crisp, refreshing flavor. The soup has perfect thickness and is sweetened by the cucumber.

Curry Noodle

Here we have curry noodle with Chinese cabbage, bean sprouts, vegetarian "meat" ball, tofu, and a little bit of chilli sauce on the side. The meal was served on top of banana leaf. The banana leaf serves two purposes: for enhanced presentation and for the aromatic flavor it provides. The leaf is not eaten, but its pleasant aroma is lightly absorbed into the noodle. In India and Singapore, it is very common to serve Indian food on banana leaf.

Vegetarian "Duck"

Sure looks like real duck meat doesn't it? Here we have a soy-base vegetarian "duck". The original piece was white in color, and after deep frying it turned a nice golden brown. When eaten fresh out of the wok, the outer layer is quite crispy and tastey. The overall texture is firm when eaten hot. Once it cools down, it gets a bit softer. This was one of our main course today.

Beginnings of a Startup

We're in the process of researching vegetarian recipes. Each day we will cook at least one vegetarian dish and will post the photos of those dishes onto this site. Although certain dishes may look like it contains meat, they are actualy all vegetarian. Certain items emulate the taste and texture of meat but are soy or yam based. The pictures show the actual dishes that we cooked and took photos of on our dinner table. Descriptions for each photo will come shortly, we will just post images for now.

Above we have yellow basmati rice topped with red berries alongside some slices of vegetarian "fish" that were covered in a tangy, home-made tomato-base sauce mixed with a dab of rice cooking wine and other ingredients.

Here is the uncut vegetarian "fish" sitting atop rows of boiled carrots and cucumbers.

This is stir fried fat rice noodles (banh canh) mixed with vegetarian "prawns", vegetarian "chicken", bean sprouts, and fresh mushrooms all surrounded by a ring of boiled spinach. Yum!
